JWZ designed a 5.65 acre neighborhood park which fills a gap in the City of Henderson park system. In addition to serving the local neighborhood, the park also serves as a trailhead for several nearby sections of the City’s trail system. The park was designed around the theme of “Living in the Desert”. There are several custom designed interpretive exhibits that discuss a variety of topics including: sustainable landscape practices, community gardening, composting, and the appropriate use of water, and protection and treatment of the surrounding desert. The park’s amenities reflect many of these exhibits, for example, the program and community needed a turf area for recreation and sports practices – the provided design adjusted the grades, being sensitive to balance the cut/fill as much as possible on this sloping site, we also designed the turf area no larger than needed and irrigated with the most current technology available to ensure maximum efficiency. Additional park amenities include age appropriate, shaded tot lots designed with creative play interpretation as a goal; several other active play features provided include: basketball, recreational skate area, tetherball, and horseshoes.
